my top 51 albums of 2012

before I post the list I'd like to just point out the fact that this list is solely based upon what I have liked and disliked as far as music goes this year. It's not about the rating on pitchfork etc.

I'm pretty sure this is the only end of year top 51 albums list that I've seen so far that doesn't have Kendrick Lamar in the top 5 / on it at all but please bare with me.

1. Be The Void - Dr. Dog

I'm sorry for those of you who are completely butthurt about there not being Frank Ocean on this list.

I have a feeling a lot of people will disagree with me on Dr. Dog's "Be The Void" being #1 but I really do think it is mad underrated and that more people need to listen to it.

I also think many will disagree on Animal Collective's "Centipede Hz" as #5. We all know that Animal Collective is loved by many and hated by many. I for one love Animal Collective, I think they put on a great live show, and I think Centipede Hz is overall a really good album. I think most Animal Collective fans are disappointed by it for sure though, and I'm not going to lie I was a bit disappointed at first too. Merriweather Post Pavilion was SPECTACULAR. I loved it. I guess everyone was just expecting something at least remotely similar to Merriweather Post Pavilion and when they heard the strange sampling and psychedelic vibes they just weren't feeling it? I don't know.
I think Animal Collective changes directions and evolves into something different with every single album they put out. Strawberry Jam is completely different from Sung Tongs and both of those are different from Merriweather Post Pavilion and Centipede Hz is just something new.

After listening to the album from start to end a few times I fell in love with it. It grew on me.

I'm sure a lot of people will be confused as to why I made Coexist by The XX #34 instead of at least in my top 20... Well.. Even though I did really enjoy a good amount of tracks on this album... It just feels kind of empty. In no way shape or form does it even compare to their last album as far as keeping me entertained goes. Aside from the music, the band is overexposed a bit I think. Have you ever even seen someone's tumblr blog that didn't at least have one "✖" at least somewhere on the page? Both album covers are almost iconic now. So I give them big props for getting their brand out there but for me Coexist just wasn't doing much for me like the last one did.

Some other artists that put out music this year that should at least get an honorable mention that I couldn't find a place for in that list are...

Divine Fits
Santigold
White Rabbits
Menomena
The Cribs

And here's some music I was very very disappointed in. I just didn't get the hype.

POP ETC! Oh goodness. Well, let's face it. They were better as The Morning Benders. I'm sure we can all agree on that.

HAIM! What is this? Just no.

BEST COAST!

Poor Best Coast. This new album was so bad... Hipster Runoff called it a 'parody of a Best Coast album'.
The lyrics for "The Only Place" make me want to curl up in a ball and cry...

"We were born with sun in our teeth and in our hair
When we get bored we like to sit around, sit around and stare
At the mountains, at the birds, at the ocean, at the trees
We have fun, we have fun, we have fun when we please"

Bethany look what you've done!

"what"

At least we still have the last album that was good! Wa-hoo that's a timeless jam.

Anyway, big congrats to Dr. Dog this year. Be The Void won me over.

So the fact that my last post was a month and a half ago, and that it was about something I had done a month before that... you guys probably think that I'm dead.

i am not dead.

i am alive.

Sorry for the extremely long wait for the blog post, I've been really caught up in my schoolwork / procrastinating on tumblr etc.

other than all of that I've been making stickers, lots and lots of stickers.

I ordered about 200 stickers from usps.com for free and have been drawing on them.

so far I've made...

  • napoleon dynamite slaps
  • a couple KAWS slaps
  • a small bunch of das racist/kool a.d/heems slaps
  • tyler the creator
  • death grips
  • BAPE logo
  • kidrobot logo

if anyone wants to trade slaps with me I think it'd be fun, contact me through twitter or commenting on this post. (link to contact info page ...here)

good stuff.

I gave about half of those to my friend Hauken.
(link to Hauken's soundcloud that he barely uses .... here)

Another good deal of my time has gone to re-doing my room. It's looking niiiice.

As far as art goes I actually made a short children's book for school that came out pretty cool. It's really psychedelic and colorful.

speaking of psychedelic...
my taste in music recently has been swaying towards 60's psychedelic music and newer stuff like tame impala, who I will be seeing in february!

Bongos!

over the summer I actually saw Strawberry Alarm Clock perform in California at the Whisky A Go Go. It was a cool show, all of the original band members were playing except for the flute guy who died. R.I.P flute guy.

everyone was wearing long colorful tunics + lighting incense.

perfect jam.

and just for fun here's a photo of me holding a rubber chicken in the clouds.

and before I forget, here are those photos from the animal collective + micachu & the shapes show from back in September:

recent concerts

About a month ago I went to The Variety Playhouse in Atlanta, Georgia to see Dirty Projectors and POP ETC (The Morning Benders).
Because Dirty Projectors had just put out Swing Lo Magellan I was super excited.

I had only heard a couple songs by POP ETC (Halfway to Heaven and Keep It For Your Own) but I was surprised to find that all of their songs were actually pretty good even though, and I'm sure many others agree, The Morning Benders were much better.

Dirty Projectors killed it.
It was an overall really great show.

UPDATE:

(About a week or two ago I also had the opportunity to see Passion Pit with Wild Belle and Young Blood Hawke. And even before that I saw Animal Collective with Micachu and The Shapes... where I had a lot of interesting experiences I'll write about later today. I will also post photos from both shows later today.)
